To Think About It
The Good And The Evil.
It is an issue to share and discuss with your parents.
It is an issue to share and discuss with your parents.
The man from his existence has been in the
constant fight of the good and the evil; the decisions are taken by an interest
that always looks for the satisfaction of its acts. In the novel: “Strange case
of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” the main characters are shown within a mystery not
resolve, where detective Utterson looks for culprit of the murder
of an English politician, his suspicions tend to Mr. Hyde as the culprit
and the Dr. Jekyll, who has make friends recently with Hyde, is concealing him
of the crime. Soon a friend of the detective, Lanyon, is murder and Hyde returns
to be suspicious of this crime.
Everything is solved at the moment that the
butler of Dr. Jekyll calls to the detective to help him with a stranger who
manages to enter the laboratory of the doctor and to kill
him.
At the moment they enter the laboratory they
discover that the stranger was Mr. Hyde, who’s laid on the floor because it has
committed suicide, meanwhile, the corpse of the Doctor Jekyll does not appear
in any side. Detective Utterson
continues investigating trying to understand the reason for which Mr. Hyde
causes the death of innocent people and also near to him. Finally he finds the
letters of his friend Lanyon, where he reveals to be witness of the physical
transformation of Jekyll and Hyde, after the doctor took a potion done by
him.
Soon he found scripts of the Doctor in his
youth where he expressed that the human consciousness was made of two main
factors. The good and the evil, both factors are bottled in a continuous fight.
According to the theory of Dr. Jekyll it is possible to polarize and to separate
these two factors in a person, he invented then a potion that concentrates the
maleficent part and managed to clean leaving all the aspects of a good person.
In the moment that he took the potion his physical form change so that showed a
horrifying thing, he became small, his strength increased, his evil personality
was perverse and dominant. This person he called Edward Hyde. Jekyll took the
potion regularly to give him pleasures that being him he would not allow
himself to do, but every time he took the potion Hyde was growing strongly not
being able to control it until he committed its first murder which it took
Jekyll to stop taking the potion. Even so the transformations happened without
needing the potion and Hyde took control over Jekyll which would take him to
the suicide.
According to the origins of the novel of the author, (Robert Louis
Stevenson and published for the first time in English in 1886) his thoughts
turned around human duality and this were developed in the idea of good and the
evil. His tale was born from a dream that according to its wife, she says, to
woke him up because she was awakened by cries of horror from Louis, to which he
woke up furious because he believed he was dreaming a fine bogey tale.
What it is possible to be deduced, and it is
really the conclusion that is in subtext of the film, it is that to separate the
good of the evil is something unnatural, the conscious is the knowledge of the
facts that surrounds us, of the certainties and of the doubts that are born to
us and the decisions that we take are the effort to understand the human
nature.
Platon says that the Good is the supreme idea
and that the evil is the ignorance. Aristoteles considers a good action the one
that leads to the achievement of the good of the man to its aim, therefore, all
action that is against it will be bad.
Taking these two proposals as central axis,
the first one tells us that Good is the supreme and by this we understand that
man has a concept of Good, therefore he knows what is good and it is a code that
we all understand; at least like something supreme. If we all understand this,
therefore exists a common consciousness. The second part of the first proposal
says to us that evil is ignorance, here its insinuate to us that not to know
and not to be arranged to understand takes us to commit the evil, to be
ignorant is to refuse to the nature that surround us, not to want to accept a
code or a principle for a common understanding. The second proposal tells us
that a good action is the one that leads to the achievement of the good of the
man to its aim.
If we took a stereotype from the society, an
assassin, we will understand to which the second proposal talks about. An
assassin can be by different causes an assassin, we take for example the count
of Montecristo, (classic novel of adventures by Alexandre Dumas) the cause of
his revenge is the ignorance, he is illiterate, his homicides (bureaucrats and
politicians) were with an aim and for good cause, and when we see the film or
we read the novel those homicides are accepted by us because of a good cause,
because he suffered and nevertheless we forgot that he is ignorant, because its
present a humble and noble character to us.
Another example can be the Dr Hannibal
Lechter (character of the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris), a psychopath
doctor that has no reasons or motivations to commit his homicides, at the same
time, he eats his victims for personal satisfaction. If we applied the first
proposal the character is not ignorant of its acts, he understands what are the
causes, nevertheless, he feeds on them is a simple desire of satisfaction, but,
if we apply the second part of the second proposal to this example; therefore,
all action that is against it will be bad. Dr Hannibal fulfilled his
homicides and satisfies his desires in spite of who was against him or the
people affected, because for him it was what he was doing, for him the homicides
did not go against his principles, therefore the good or bad concept becomes
subjective. For all of us it was bad what the Dr Hannibal Lechter did
nevertheless for him is not bad, is quite the opposite, because he is fulfilling
his desire.
In conclusion the good and the evil are in
fact one human nature the only thing that it really opposes to the evil is a
universal concept of order, an act to avoid the chaos of the deeply inexplicable
thing that is the human.
Santo Tomas de Aquino explained that: the sin
of one does not want the evil, what wants is the sensible pleasure of an act,
that assumes to be bad, but its aim is not to make the
evil.
He adds that God created a Universe whose
order demanded the capacity of defect and the corruption on the part of some
beings.
He proposes to us that justice demands that
the bad moral is punished and postulates that the punishment exists not by
itself but so that the order of justice is
preserved.
The law or justice is the order or the code
by which our nature is in force. Our concept of good or evil is classified by
the constant idea of being able to live without
conflicts.
So good and evil exists by the idea to
maintain an order but in the root of all the good and evil are only a nature and
as all the nature is uncontrollable.
